hello there! househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10114350871115492391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-791724826304715476.post-6021151814583201062012-07-17T12:53:00.000-07:002012-08-02T10:25:10.514-07:00Sesame in July!Looking for a plant that can tolerate full sun in July? Look no further - sesame is here! I have seen this herb (an annual) in action in a demonstration garden, but never for sale in a nursery. Last week I stumbled upon some seedlings at Bakers Nursery in Phoenix for $3.99 apiece. I have never grown sesame but am excited to give it a try.

This plant will eventually grow pods which house the sesame seeds.

In general, however, take a break during July. Other than watering there is not much to do in the garden. Plants are suffering and wilting due to the high heat so leave them alone. Don't try to prune, propagate or transplant.

Stay cool!
It's almost the 4th, and what better way to celebrate than with a backyard BBQ {unless you're in AZ, then it's a poolside BBQ}?
Here's a collection of delicious recipes to make your dinner sparkle as much as the fireworks!
I followed the directions for the regular paper lollies, making my accordion folds hot dog style (use the long side) so it make them extra long. I had to use 5 pieces of paper to make a circle, it's really HUGE once you get it all hot glued together .

I repeated the process with the smaller pieces of paper (just 3 sheets for those) and added some more Nautical Chic Printable elements to jazz them up a bit. To attach the different sizes together, I punched holes in the lollies and wrapped them with wire. Then I cute out circles of chipboard from cereal boxes and hot glues those to the back for stability. Once I strung them up with Divine Twine from a punched hole in the largest lollie, they were ready to hang up! So fun & festive for the 4th, I think I'll leave them up until Labor Day!
I am visiting my parents in New Jersey and must share some of my mother's garden with you. My mom has been a big inspiration to me as she is a long-time gardener and has a beautiful property. One of her garden's features is hydrangea. She has many varieties and colors and luckily, they are all in bloom in June. Take a look:
Hydrangea have a unique ability to change color based upon the ph of the soil. I have read that you can put one in a pot and manipulate the ph in an effort to change if from pink to blue, for example. Pretty cool science!

Hydrangea are not intended for the Arizona climate. They are better suited for cold climates, or zones 4-9. If you see one in a store in Phoenix, do not buy it with the intent of planting it in your garden. It may survive for a week or so, but will ultimately land in your compost.

Somewhere, over the rainbow, I will have a nice big spacious organized garage. Until then, I will dream and drool over all these spaces that are not filled with furniture to be finished and overspray : /

If you're anything like me, you GROSSLY overestimated the amount of vegetables you should have planted this season. Granted, this was our time starting a garden, so my strategy was to plant a ton in case half our plants died off. I guess my thumb was greener than I thought because out of the 18 tomato plants we put in the ground, only 2 have not fruited. And by fruited, I mean EXPLODED with tomatoes. Our cherry tomato plants, which started at 1 foot high, have grown to 5 feet high and are crawling out across our walkways on PVC pipe bridges we've set up for them. All in all, we are harvesting far too many tomatoes every day to eat so I had to find something to do with all those 'maters. Luckily I came across this recipe from Smitten Kitchen for Fresh Tomato Sauce and set out to make my first batch today.

I will warn you, the prepping of the tomatoes does take FOREVER, but the cooking of the sauce is easy peasy after all that. Here's the recipe for the sauce- the flavor does beat anything you can buy in a jar, even if it does take you all afternoon.

When I stumbled across this tutorial, I literally shouted JACKPOT at the top of my lungs. Brillance, is what it is. Don't get me I LOVE Annie Sloan's chalkpaint, but it's very hard to get your hands on, and while there are a great many colors, you are always going to be limited to what they carry. Now, you can make ANY color chalk paint your heart desires (and of course, at a fraction of the cost).

All I did was mosey on over to Home Depot, grabbed Martha Stewart's paint sample of Main Lobster, and asked the mixer for a flat sample of the paint. It's a nice sized sample for about $5, and then I grabbed a 2.5 lb bag of Plaster of Paris for about $6. I went home, poured about 2/3 of the paint sample into a plastic container, then shook about 1/3 cup of the Plaster of Paris into the container and mixed thoroughly. What I ended up with was a lovely thick paint that was very similar to the chalk paint consistency. I got to work on the chair, but the mixture did start to thicken up with time, and the heat (I was painting outside) so I added a few drops of water (be careful not to add to much! a water little goes a long way), remixed and it was perfect and silky!

My chair was sitting outside for a while so not in great condition. It has paint flaking off of it, so I lightly sanded the thing to get most of the flakes off, then painted right over it. What I ended up with was a antiquey handpainted look- not the gorgeous smooth professional look my husband produces on furniture, but the change in style was fun & refreshing! I topped it with clear wax, and am now debating on glazing over the piece and distressing it a little before recovering the cushion seat with burlap. I'll be sure to share the finished pictures once I decide!

June is the time of year when zinnias are in bloom. They add tremendous color and height to any garden and are also a beautiful cut flower for your favorite vase.

This year, I have scattered zinnia everywhere: in between vegetables, in pots and amid my sunflowers. There are a zillion varieties of zinnia so your choices of color, shape and height are endless.

Zinnia can be planted through mid-June, so pick up a couple seed packets today and get these beauties in the ground. They are tolerant of full sun but need water daily.

Happy Planting!

In my kitchen I have the need for bar stools. Unfortunately for my style (modern/ contemporary/ industrial), bar stools can be pretty pricey. I shopped around everywhere and could not find anything that fit my budget - $10 a chair. Yes, I am cheap. One day in Goodwill I found a roughed up Franklin barstool for $4. It was the wrong color, but the height and design was right. At that price I could not pass it up. And I could paint it later.

During the a class on chair reupholstering at the home and garden event, there was a section on furniture painting. All the information came in handy to transform this mess into something fantastic. After taking the chair apart, cleaning, sanding, 2 coats of paint, and some polyurethane, I had a brand new chair. Honestly, without that information this project would have taken me a million years longer. And would not have been able to standup to my 3 year old and his friends.
A few weeks later I tracked down a white Franklin on Craigslist for $8. Now I have a set for less that $20. I feel like a winner.
Before I started hello there! house, I was a Realtor who was obsessed with Historic Districts. I love all the whimsy and quirks they have and I have wanted to live in one all my life. This weekend I'm taking my kids to the Mesa Museum For Youth, so I'll definitely take the time to drive around the Historic Neighborhoods around Main Street in Mesa. This little beauty is for sale- don't all the upgrades make you want to move right in?

Milkweed is a native Arizona plant that also serves as a host plant for monarch butterflies. The monarchs are amazing creatures, flying up to 3,000 miles twice a year for their migration to Mexico and back. Typically, you will see them in Phoenix in early April en route to Mexico, and again in the fall on their return trip to the north. The height of a monarch presence in the Valley occurs in late September to early October.

Host plants for monarchs have greatly decreased over the years due to land development across the country. We are lucky in Arizona because we have native plants - i.e. Milkweed - that are also monarch habitats. How does it work? The monarchs will lay their eggs on your milkweed.
Caterpillars will hatch and eat your plant but don't worry! Established
milkweeds will bounce back and return next year to assist again in this natural process.
The following milkweeds are all native to AZ. Choose one for your
yard, or mix and match up to 10 of these plants and become an official
Monarch Waystation!

Narrowleaf Milkweed

Tropical Milkweed

Desert Milkweed (most common)

Pineleaf Milkweed

I am currently working with Gail Morris, a local monarch expert, on
growing two varieties of milkweed from seed to encourage more of these plants in Valley
landscapes. These
seeds and plants will be available for purchase at the Fall Plant Sale
at the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.
Tutorials // Giant Cross Stitch

I have not been this excited about a project in quite a while! It all began when I saw this from JD Decker:

This whole concept blows my mind and if I am being honest, I am a little disappointed that I didn't think of this idea on my own. Cross stitching with yarn onto fabric on a ginormous scale. Love it.

My wheels have been turning ever since.

I have this huge ocean print on canvas that I got second hand for a steal. My husband hates it. I could love it if I could afford to surround it with the perfect environment. It just looks like junk on our walls as they are right now. So it has been living behind (yes, behind) our couch for months.

My mother used to own an antique cross stitch. It hung beneath the fireplace mantle. I loved it. Those antique crossed stitches go for about $200.00, so I found a replicating pattern years ago and I was going to make my own, but then I realized maybe it was a little too out dated for what I want in my home.

Fast forward to now. Giant canvas + burlap + traditional cross stitch pattern + modern colored yarn + large scale = traditional art with a modern twist and a hint of sentimental value.

Here is a step by step of what I did. Warning: the pattern I chose is pretty involved. If you are new at cross stitching pick something simple or make your own pattern on graph paper. That is the beauty of this project: simple patterns are stunning made large. I chose burlap because it already has little holes and because my pattern is pretty time consuming as it is. Burlap is an easier fabric to work with and it does come in different colors too. You can choose any fabric (I really thought a floral would be amazing!). Here is a great tutorial if you are not going to use burlap.

Materials:

canvas

burlap (add 5" to length and height of canvas and this is how big your burlap needs to be)

cross stitch pattern (you can make your own on graph paper too!)

yarn (I like the thought of modern colors to bring a traditional craft to the modern age)

large needle

staple gun

a calculator (most likely)

ONE // Before you buy a canvas, first you want to do the math. Please do not let this part scare you. I have tried to make it easy for those who are math challenged. Once you get past this part it is so much fun! Promise? Ok. Decide how large you want each cross stitch to be. One by one inch is great. Here is a formula to guide you in choosing a good canvas size:

Size of cross stitch x number of stitches high on pattern (count the x's from the lowest to the highest) = canvas height

Size of cross stitch x number of stitches across on pattern (count the x's from the furthest left to the furthest right) = canvas length

Now you have your minimum dimensions for your canvas. Keep in mind that if you want a lot of empty fabric space to border the actual pattern add some inches to your canvas size.

If you already have a canvas and a pattern (like me) and you need to know how large to make your stitches to ensure it will fit then use this formula:

Canvas height / number of stitches high on pattern = size of cross stitch ( keep in mind that this is your maximum---if your number comes out to 2.5" you can definitely take it down to 1" and the pattern will fit on your canvas. This number tells you the largest your stitch can be while making sure the pattern fits on the canvas).

Canvas length / number of stitches across on pattern = size of cross stitch

You will most likely get two different numbers for your size of cross stitch. A cross stitch need to be square so you will need to settle on a number that works for both height and length. Just make sure you settle on a number that is not larger than the smaller number of the two (example: you came out with .5 and 1--your stitches will need to be .5" because .5 was your height maximum).

THE MATH IS DONE (mostly)!! (can you tell I am a slight math nerd? yeah. Remember when you were in school and were like, "when am I ever going to need this?". Answer: when you decide to make a giant cross stitch). Now onto the fun stuff!

TWO // Cut your burlap to the right size. Take the dimensions of your canvas and add 5" to each side (as in 4 sides) and that is the size your burlap should be.

THREE // Map out your pattern. Find the center of the burlap and the center of the pattern and start there. Work one way and then the other. Try to follow the grain in the burlap as best as you can but there may be areas where you will need to go with your eye to keep those x's straight. Make sure you measure your stitches for consistency. Here is a basic cross stitching guide to help if you are a beginner. And don't forget to tie knots whenever you begin or end a strand of yarn (on the back!) to prevent your work from undoing itself.

FOUR // Once your pattern is complete, center it on the canvas, turn it all over and staple the excess fabric to the back. Make sure your corners are nice a neat!
It's that time of year again, friends! When you can drive out to the enchanting Schnepf Farms and pick the plumpest, sweetest, juiciest peaches in the state. I've taken my kids for the past 3 years, and I swear they are from heaven. It is so fun to watch your kids hunt down the perfect peach and bite into them with juice dripping down their faces.
I've painted and waxed my second piece of furniture with Annie Sloan's chalk paint, and let me tell you- I'm completely smitten with it. It went on so smooth, and the wax was simple as pie to apply. My little accent cabinet looks fantastic in the Graphite with the clear wax and those fabulous "glass" knobs from Hobby Lobby.
I followed Miss Mustard's Seed's tutorial on how to apply the wax, she does a great job explaining the different types of waxes and what they do.
She has done a ton of lovely projects with the chalk paint, I really want to try out the two toned paint look and the dark wax next!

Well, two weeks in a row of a bug blog. This week my garden was visited by the Western Grape Leaf Skeletonizer. My grape vines looked like they had been stripped or sucked on by an insect. Upon further inspection, I discovered about fifty (50) of these small caterpillars.

Grape leaf skeletonizers are very destructive pests. At the first sign of caterpillars, treat
with Bt (bacillus thuringiensis). The caterpillars must ingest the spray;
shortly after eating it, they stop feeding and die. Basically, the Bt disrupts the insects' disgestive system and they starve. This is a
biological control and is not harmful to birds or beneficial insects.
Bt is available at most garden centers and is environmentally safe. Crops can be harvested the day after any Bt variety is applied.
Source: Biocontrol Network, www.biconet.com.

I was lucky and saved my vine due to an early detection. I initially plucked off the caterpillars and then applied the Bt later that day. However, these pests can destroy an entire vine in just a few days. I have a friend who, upon discovering her infestation, had thousands of skeletonizers and it was too late. Her vine was completely destroyed.

It is important to check your garden daily. Just a cursory glance over each plant will allow you to notice subtle changes. I do this each morning with a cup of coffee and it only takes minutes. In just two weeks, I have saved my pepper plants and now, my grapes.

Happy Hunting!
Oh, the hassle of a bed skirt. Although they are pretty they can also be pretty hard to work with! I have been seeing some tutorials floating around on how to solve that problem. Behold:

Last week I was casually making the rounds in my garden when I noticed, from a distance, that my pepper plants looked terrible. At closer glance, I found four tomato hornworms on my three plants. I had checked my plants that morning, and within a six-hour span of time, they had eaten more than half of each plant.

A fascinating and beautiful caterpillar, but not one you want in your garden! They are a major pest.

The tomato hornworm appears in warmer weather, May - August. They are bright green, with a distinguishing "horn" on their rear side. They typically are about three inches long and one-half inch wide. Despite their size, they blend in very well with the green foliage of plants. Look closely! You can even use a black light at night to locate them. They transform into a large, five-spotted, grey moth called a Manduca quinquemaculata.

Hornworms are found on tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, tobacco and potato plants. I have only seen them on tomatoes and peppers in my experience.

Simply pluck these caterpillars off your plant - immediately! They have a tight grip. I would not recommend using any type of spray on them since they prey upon edible plants. Remove them instantly as they can consume a large amount of foliage and will destroy your plant in no time. As I mentioned, I estimate they were on my pepper plants for six hours. This photo shows the destruction in that time. Two-thirds of this pepper plant is gone and I doubt it will recover.

Hornworm hunting is a favorite among children. Give them a magnifying glass and send them into your garden. I offer a reward for every one they find!

Happy Hunting!
